The Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) recently announced that it awarded $52.5 million to community organizations as part of its efforts to combat suicide among veterans. This is part of an ongoing initiative to help veterans struggling with depression, PTSD, and other psychological issues, helping them to seek treatment for suicidal ideation. It also helps provide resources for veterans struggling to obtain mental health care, streamlining the process to get veterans the treatment they need.

VA Begins Offering Free Emergency Care for Suicidal Veterans

As of January 17, 2023, the Department of Veterans Affairs (also known as the VA) has begun offering emergency services for veterans suffering from suicidal thoughts. Any suicidal veterans will be able to go to any healthcare facility, whether in the VA network or not, and seek emergency care. This measure will potentially do a great deal to help veterans struggling with mental health issues who are in need of emergency psychological care.

VA Proposes Waiver of Copays for Veterans at Risk of Suicide

The Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) has proposed a new program that would eliminate copayments for outpatient mental health visits, and reduce copays for medications, for veterans at a high risk of suicide. This proposed rule change, published for commentary in the Federal Register on January 5, would make it substantially easier for veterans suffering from suicidal thoughts to seek mental health counseling and treatment. Suicide Rate for Veterans Dropped in Latest Annual Report

In their most recent annual report on the suicide rate of veterans, the Department of Veterans’ Affairs (VA) has announced that the suicide rate is on the decline, at the highest rate since 2001. This decline is seen as a result of efforts made by the VA to tackle the difficult issues of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and other mental health problems that are common among veterans. However, more work needs to be done for veterans who still struggle with their mental health after returning to civilian life.
