For the past two years, the United States Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) and IBM Watson Health have had an agreement to work together to help treat veterans with stage four cancer. The program has been effective in helping those veterans that suffer from stage four cancer enter remission.
The unique aspect of curing these individuals involves artificial intelligence (AI). In order to help cancer patients enter remission, IBM Watson Health uses Genomics technology. According to the United States Department of Veterans Affairs, with the use of Genomics technology, oncologists are able to use AI “to help interpret the genomic data, identifying relevant mutations and potential therapeutic options that target those mutations.”
According to the Department of Veterans Affairs, the organization treats approximately 3.5% of cancer patients residing in the United States; this is the largest group treated by a single organization. Due to the program’s popularity, the VA has established a central location for its treatment center in Durham, North Carolina.
