VA Launches Study Into PFAS Exposure Among Veterans

The Department of Veterans Affairs (also known as the VA) has announced that it is investigating a potential link between per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) and kidney cancer. This is because many veterans may have been exposed to PFAS during their military service, which would make their cancer potentially service-related. Depending on the results of the study, it could result in more people being able to access veterans disability benefits.

What Are PFAS?

PFAS is a broad term for a class of chemicals commonly used in a variety of industrial processes and commercial products, which are known as “forever chemicals” due to their resistance to breaking down. They are used in everything from non-stick cookware, to stain-resistant clothing, to firefighting foam used to put out especially difficult fires. However, increased scrutiny has been placed on these chemicals as they have been associated with increased risks of liver disease, a suppressed immune response, and certain birth defects in children exposed in the womb.

Why is the VA Studying It?

The VA has proposed this study into PFAS after it was found that veterans may have been exposed to them in the course of their military service, which may be linked to an increased chance of developing kidney cancer. However, there is currently insufficient scientific evidence to back up this claim. By studying the connection between PFAS exposure and kidney cancer, some veterans may be able to better explain the medical conditions they have suffered from.

What Impact Could This Have on Veterans?

This is particularly important because veterans are only entitled to disability benefits for medical conditions related to their service. Without medical evidence, people currently suffering from kidney cancer cannot get disability benefits for their disease from the VA. If a demonstrable link is found, then veterans exposed to PFAS during their service could claim disability benefits for their cancer.

What Should You Do?

If you are a veteran suffering from a chronic disease that may be related to your service, you should speak to a lawyer with experience handling VA disability cases. They can help you review your case to determine the best path forward for you. The sooner you call, the sooner they can get to work for you.
