The White House issued a briefing on October 10 that President Trump signed into law the Veterans’ Compensation Cost-of-Living Adjustment Act of 2018. This allows those receiving veterans’ disability compensation to receive a cost-of-living adjustment (COLA) increase similar to what Social Security recipients receive.
Under the Act, which was introduced by Congressman Mike Bost of Illinois, veterans with a service-connected disability will receive a COLA increase, effective December 1, 2018. In addition, there will be an increase in clothing allowances, as well as additional compensation for their dependents and indemnity compensation to surviving spouses and their children.
Unlike Social Security, in which the COLA is automatically adjusted every year, the Veterans’ Compensation COLA Act must be renewed every year, according to the House Committee on Veterans’ Affairs. The purpose of passing the bill, the committee stated, is to ensure the benefits the veterans receive are enough to provide for them a comfortable lifestyle and that they receive the same compensation as Social Security recipients.
In a statement, Bost, who is himself a veteran, said, “As a country, we must remember the sacrifices of our veterans who have bravely served our nation, as well as their families, and I remain committed to providing the best care possible for them.”
