In their most recent annual report on the suicide rate of veterans, the Department of Veterans’ Affairs (VA) has announced that the suicide rate is on the decline, at the highest rate since 2001. This decline is seen as a result of efforts made by the VA to tackle the difficult issues of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and other mental health problems that are common among veterans. However, more work needs to be done for veterans who still struggle with their mental health after returning to civilian life. Post-traumatic stress disorder, often abbreviated as PTSD, is one of the most common psychological disorders that veterans face after they come home. Unfortunately, people who suffer from PTSD often have difficulty getting the help they need due to problems getting their condition diagnosed. Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder or PTSD is a mental health condition recognized by the American Psychiatric Association. During the Vietnam War, which took place from 1961 to 1975, PTSD was not a clinical diagnosis. Therefore, many veterans serving the armed forced during this time period did not receive treatment for their condition and therefore did not have a documented diagnosis or condition in their medical files.
